Lipari, Italy

Lipari, the largest of the Eolian Islands, attracts numerous Italian and foreign visitors with the great landscape and cultural heritage it offers. The town of Lipari has a very ancient history, developed since pre-history on volcanic rubble, called the Castle. With its 10,000 inhabitants, it is the true capital of the Eolian Islands.

The Acropolis

Called the Castle, this ancient nucleus of Lipari dominates the city and is surrounded by a strong wall built by the Spanish in the 17th century. The area tells the entire history of the Eolian Islands, from the Neolithic was to the present day.

The cathedral of San Bartolomeo

The cathedral was built in 1080 by the Norman king Ruggero II in honor of the patron saint of the island and rebuilt several times after its destruction. Its current appearance dates from the 1700s. Among the many works inside we point out the silver statue of San Bartolomeo, on the altar, and a beautiful table from the beginning of 16th century, the Madonna del Rosario. The Norman cloister is very beautiful, set in the 18th century church and recovered, after a patient work of restoration.

Eolian Archeological Museum

A must for visitors to Lipari, the museum is among the largest archeological collections in Italy. The Archeological Museum is housed in several buildings, all in stone, and is divided into five sections that illustrate the millennial history of the archipelago, from pre-history to the Roman epoch, in addition to a volcanology section. The many impressive facets of the museum include a rich collection of terracotta and models of Greek comedy masks.

Outside the museum, you may visit the archeological park of Contrada Diana, which houses numerous sarcophaguses and Greco-Roman tombs (4th-2nd century B.C.).
