Vulcano, Italy
Vulcano is the first island found arriving from Milazzo. It is one of the two active volcanoes of the archipelago. The panorama is picturesque and wild: it presents itself to the visitor with its two craters, the Cratere della Fossa (391 m) and the small Vulcanello. At the center of the island the green cultivated upper plains spread, ringed by bare hills descending towards the sea.
In contrast with Stromboli, the volcano here is dormant, with the last eruption going back to 1888-90 when the volcano exploded and continued to spread destruction for almost two years. Today volcanic activity is limited to the characteristic phenomena that make it a tourist attraction: the smoking sulfur fumaroles and the thermal muds.
